Paper Flowers out of Coffee Filters

I made these beautiful peonies out of dyed coffee filters.

  • To dye coffee filters, you need food coloring and two large bowls.
  • Place one cup of cold water into each bowl.
  • Put about 6 to 8 drops of red food coloring into one bowl and place a stack of white coffee filters into the water.  When the filters are saturated with water, wring them out and separate and place them flat to dry.
  • Put 1 to 2 drops in the other bowl, and place a stack of coffee filters into the water.  When the filters are saturated, wring them out and lay flat to dry.
  • Make sure to leave some filters white to provide a nice range of color from light to dark in your flower.imageI made a bunch of peonies out of coffee filters, including white ones to make this big bunch of flowers.

imageI had a video prepared going through this process, but I need to perfect my video making technique before I can publish it.  It was a lot harder than I thought.

To make your own flowers, you need the following equipment (pictured above):

  • Coffee filters (white or dyed)
  • Wooden skewers (found in the grocery store in the section where grilling supplies are sold).
  • Floral wire
  • Packing Tape
  • Wire Cutters
  • Scissors
  • Floral Tape
  • White glue
  • Leaves (I used my Silhouette to cut my leaves, or you can cut one freehand from a piece of cardstock).
  • imageTake two white coffee filters.

  • Fold in half, and fold in half again.
  • imageUsing scissors, cut a pointed edge along the folded coffee filter.
  • imageSet aside.
  • imageTake four lighter pink coffee filters.
  • imageFold in half
  • imageFold in half again.
  • imageCut these four filters on a curvy/wavy angle as shown above.  Set aside.
  • Repeat with four of the darkest colored filters.
  • imageYou will have ten filters, two white, and two sets of 4 pink filters, one lighter, and one darker.image
  • Stack filters with the white filters on the bottom, the lighter pink on top of the white, and finally the darker pink on top of the lighter pink filters.
  • imageUsing a wooden skewer, poke a hole through the bottom of all of the filters.
  • imageThis is how your flower should look.
  • imageCut off the sharp point of the skewer so it doesn’t harm anyone.
  • imagePlace glue around the skewer on the top and bottom of the flower.
  • imageBunch up all of the filters together from the bottom.
  • imagePlace glue on the bottom of the flower, and take floral tape and begin wrapping.
  • imageContinue wrapping the floral tape down the skewer.
  • imageWhen you get to the bottom of the skewer, wrap back towards the top for about an inch or so.
  • imagePut a drop of glue on the end of the tape to hold it in place.
  • imageYour flower should look just like this.
  • imageOpen up all of the filters and find the center.
  • imageCrumple the filters from the center working outwards.
  • imageOnce you have crumpled all of the filters, begin on the outside and pull each filter away from the center.

imageimageThe flower should look like this.

  • imageGlue leaf to a piece of floral wire.
  • When dry, wrap the floral wire around the stem of the flower.
  • Secure and cover wire with a piece of floral tape.

Super easy project, and one you can easily do with kids.

Have fun, and if you decide to make these flowers, send me a photo:
