Heart Attack Moment

I am still trying to calm down – yesterday evening I was hurrying around trying to get my camera, super zoom lens (200 to 500 mm), tripod and all my other stuff to catch the rising of the harvest moon at 7:15 p.m.  I mounted the camera and lens on the tripod to save time and was struggling with my gear and trying to close the front door when it happened . . .

Yep – the camera came off the tripod and crashed onto the concrete porch.  I picked the camera up and heard glass falling inside the lens and knew it wasn’t good.  I was sick – and felt so stupid – I didn’t make sure the camera was securely on the tripod.  I’ve only had this new VERY EXPENSIVE lens a little over a month, and the camera only since January.  I drove up to the water anyway, and the moon was rising, but there was a lot of haze – and the moon was very pale.  I didn’t even bother taking photos.  I drove home and brought everything inside to inspect the damage.  I took the zoom lens off, put another lens on and snapped some photos – thankfully, the camera is okay.  I had the hardest time getting the lens cap off of the zoom lens as it had jammed really bad when it fell, but I finally got it off in one piece.  The entire UV protective filter was shattered.  I had a heck of a time getting that unscrewed from the lens – but when I did – I discovered pure unadulterated joy and gratitude – the lens itself wasn’t broken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I just need to replace the UV filter which is about $100

I am SO doing a happy dance the rest of this year!
