Iceland: Final Thoughts

Iceland_Mosaic 1_2015We went to Iceland on a random whim due to a Travelzoo offer.  We loved the country and the people, the weather and lack of daylight in January, not so much.  We would love to go back in the summer, when the sun never sets and tour the same places, and perhaps some new ones as well.  Icelandair has a deal that if you fly their airline to Europe, you can stop over in Iceland and stay for up to seven days without paying any additional airfare.

Iceland has no military, and the entire time we were there, we didn’t see one police officer (who apparently are unarmed), or one police car.  We didn’t hear an ambulance or a police siren.  We forgot one of our jackets in the hotel lobby when we left to go on an excursion, and six hours later, when we returned, the jacket was still there.  You don’t see homeless people or beggars.  There is ample social services for those individuals, and those with psychiatric disorders.  Health care is very good, as are the wages.

Iceland is also very child-friendly.  All (or most) of the restaurants had play areas for kids, and really nice ones.  Think of Ikea.

If there is a downside (besides the weather and lack of daylight in winter), it is that Iceland is a very expensive country.  However, if you budget, and take advantage of a vacation package to travel in shoulder seasons (April/May and September/October), it doesn’t have to break the bank.

I hear that! Iceland is really beautiful in the summer from what I have seen.
